Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy's Annual Conference

Christopher Newport University

November 16-17, 2019

Thank you to everyone who attended the 2019 SAGP Conference at CNU! You made the conference great. We'll keep you updated on the 2020 conference here, and all the information about the 2019 conference will be retained below until information about the 2020 conference is released. We hope to have this information to you by March 15. Thank you again!

Information about the 2019 conference:

The SAGP is holding their annual conference at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia for the second consecutive year. The conference hotel, the Marriott, is located in City Center, an area filled with local shops and city activities. The Marriott is 5 minutes from Christopher Newport University, 20 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, 30 minutes from Colonial Williamsburg, and 15 minutes from the James River.

CFP

The official Call for Papers has ended and will open again in early 2020. For future reference, the 2019 CFP is here. The SAGP only requires abstracts, not full papers. To submit an abstract, first become a member of the SAGP by filling out this form and physically mailing it to the address on the form. Then, email an abstract to apreus@binghamton.edu by June 1.

Papers can be on any topic in ancient Greek philosophy, broadly construed. For example:

  1. Papers about philosophical texts originally written in Greek or Latin before 618 CE,
  2. Papers about the influence of ancient Greek philosophy on other philosophical traditions, such as Islamic, Jewish, Christian, and other traditions,
  3. Papers on medieval or modern Platonism, Aristotelianism, Stoicism, or
  4. Papers comparing classical Greek philosophical ideas with those in distinct philosophical traditions (e.g. Eastern Asian traditions) or contemporary philosophical views.

The SAGP has also closed panel acceptances. For future conferences, to propose a panel, please email a proposal to apreus@binghamton.edu by May 1 of the conference year. Decisions about papers and panels will be made by July 1.

Schedule

The conference schedule is posted here. Room locations will be given at the on-site registration.

This year, Lee Franklin will be our keynote speaker. His talk is titled, "Thought before Reason: Phantasia, Aisthêsis, and Eikasia in Plato's Republic." The talk will describes the first half of his upcoming book, in which he develops a unified interpretation of phantasia, aisthêsis, and eikasia as, together, Plato's account of primitive, or pre-rational cognition.

There will be coffee, tea, and water available throughout the conference, and there will be snacks/dessert and a cash bar during the keynote talk on Saturday night. The reception will also feature a custom drink, “The Protagoras." Whether it is a good drink is really up to you.

With the exception of the coffee and snacks provided by the conference, you are on your own for all other meals. Fortunately, there are several restaurants in City Center which are within walking distance of the Marriott, and many more restaurants within walking distance of Christopher Newport University’s campus. We will provide you with a map and a list of these restaurants upon your arrival at the conference.

Marriott City Center

The conference hotel will be the Marriott at City Center. To get a special conference rate of $129/night, you must book before Oct 15. You can book by clicking on the conference link here, or you can call the Marriott at (757) 873-9299 and ask to reserve a room at the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy's room rate. Alternatively, you can call the Marriott's reservation system at 866-329-1758 and ask for the "Ancient Greek Society" group block.

Rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and there are a limited number of rooms available. The rooms come with free Wi-Fi, and there will be university shuttles to and from the conference at CNU at no additional charge just prior to the conference and after the conference each day.

If you drive to the conference and stay at the Marriott, note that the Marriott charges $6.00 per day for on-site parking. However, there is a free parking garage on Merchant’s Walk, which is a two-minute walk to the Marriott in City Center.

The address of the hotel is: Newport News Marriott at City Center, 740 Town Center Drive, Newport News, VA 23606.
